For Christmas this year, I received something that I’ve been wanting for a while.
The Coast Redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) is the tallest tree in the world. Native to Northern California, they can grow to be up to 379 feet tall and 26 feet in diameter. They also live for up to 2200 years.
Surprisingly, they also have some of the smallest seeds of any tree.
Gus (my younger brother) received the Giant Sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum). This is the largest (by volume) tree in the world. It grows to be 311 feet tall and can be more than 60 feet in diameter. They also can live to be more than 3500 years old. However, they don’t grow to be as tall as the Coast Redwood.
We put them in the fridge to simulate a twenty day winter. We’ll remove them on 1/13/2014. Updates to follow.
